Training for the Future: NSW Police Divers Master the SRS FUSION ROV

Harnessing Advanced Underwater Technology for Safer, More Efficient Operations

Despite heavy rains and thunderstorms, BlueZone Group and SRS team members successfully conducted training for the NSW Police Diving Unit on their newly acquired SRS FUSION ROV in February in Sydney.

By day two, participants had already mastered key capabilities of the ROV, planning and executing missions in the bustling waters of Sydney Harbour. Using scuttled barges as practice targets, the divers demonstrated the FUSION’s ease of use, confidently taking turns operating the system.

The SRS FUSION ROV is a versatile, next-generation remotely operated vehicle designed for underwater operations in challenging environments. Built for ease of use and operational efficiency, the FUSION is equipped with advanced navigation systems, multiple sonar options, and high-definition video capabilities. Its modular design allows for the integration of various tools, such as the Reach Robotics X2 grabber, making it a reliable and adaptable asset for search and recovery missions, underwater inspections, and law enforcement operations.

The NSW Police Diving Unit quickly appreciated the intuitive nature of the FUSION’s control system. The vehicle’s forward-facing sonar, combined with side-scan sonar imagery, provides real-time situational awareness, enabling divers to identify and investigate underwater targets with precision. The fusion of multiple data streams into a single, user-friendly interface enhances mission success, even in low-visibility conditions—a critical factor for police operations in harbours, dams, and coastal waters.

In the classroom, SRS trainer and chief operator Addison Scott guided the team through SRS’s intuitive planning and post-processing software. The seamless overlay of sonar images on an aerial view of the harbour provided an impressive level of detail—earning praise from all participants.

Day three introduced Reach Robotics’ X2 grabber, showcasing the FUSION’s ability to physically interact with underwater environments. The team creatively used the grabber to follow a weighted line down from a buoy, demonstrating the unit’s extended capabilities for future missions.

The training concluded with a private tour of Sydney Harbour, where, against the iconic backdrop of the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge, Addison Scott presented the NSW Police Divers with their SRS Challenge Coins—marking the successful completion of an invaluable training experience.
