Australia’s claims over maritime areas are some of the largest in the world. Australia has stewardship of some of the world’s most significant maritime areas such as the Great Barrier Reef. Offshore renewable energy resources from wave, tides and ocean currents have the potential to provide baseload power for a sustainable energy future. All of these maritime assets will require AI and autonomous systems for monitoring, surveillance and management. The vast areas and hostile conditions ranging from the Southern Ocean to the Coral Sea are a natural fit for autonomous systems to complete the “dull, dangerous and dirty” work in the ocean and reduce the cost and risk of using manned ships.
BlueZone Group has provided support for Unmanned Maritime Systems and Marine Robotics operated by the Australian Defence Force (Navy & Army) since 2000. This includes Remotely Operated Vehicles for mine disposal, Unmanned Surface Vehicles and Unmanned Underwater Vehicles for surveillance and reconnaissance. Increasingly, Defence will adopt maritime robotics and autonomous systems to transform and increase the capability of Australia’s defence forces. Sovereign Australian-owned organisations such as BlueZone Group will provide the capability to maintain, modify and modernise robotic systems.
The entire underwater robotics domain is driven by the rapid development in consumer electronics – drones & phones – which makes available more powerful software payloads, reduced weight and footprint and increased endurance through new battery technologies.
