Navigating Futures: BlueZone Inspires Students at Hunter Defence Expo
Showcasing Marine Defence Capabilities, Empowering STEM Students Through Hands-on Engagement and Industry Collaboration
This month, BlueZone Group had the opportunity to attend The Hunter Defence Industry Expo, a 2-day event, highlighting local businesses working within the defence industry. The Expo opens doors for high school and university students to engage directly with industry professionals, offering valuable insight into the diverse array of businesses operating in the sector and the educational pathways that lead to careers within it. It also helps students grasp the full scope of the Hunter region’s defence ecosystem—from advanced manufacturing to marine technology—highlighting just how many career paths are available right on their doorstep.
The Hunter region has a clear connection to the Australian Defence Force, most notably through the RAAF Base at Williamtown—an anchor of aerospace capability in the area. But the region’s defence footprint extends well beyond the skies, BlueZone group were able to represent the naval and maritime capabilities within defence in the region. With deep expertise in remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) and underwater sensing, BlueZone plays a vital role in supporting naval and maritime operations, enhancing Australia’s defence readiness across coastal and deep-sea environments.
At the BlueZone stand, students were given a glimpse into the dynamic world of marine technology in the defence sector, spotlighting innovative career pathways that bridge STEM education and ocean-based exploration. Armed with an AUV from SEABER and a model MARTAC Mantas T12, students were provided insights on the typical equipment passed through our warehouse and how BlueZone Group engineers and technicians work to integrate additional items such as sonar technology, cameras, sensors, and beams manufactured from our partnered vendors.
Students currently participating in ‘Subs in Schools’, a hands-on STEM program where students design and build submarines or underwater vehicles, were able to pick the brains of our BlueZone representatives. Gaining invaluable knowledge to better equip themselves in succeeding in this project. The discussions covered a wide range of topics, from the working principles of these systems to the practical applications of underwater robotics. Students asked insightful questions and received guidance that helped bridge the gap between classroom concepts and industry practices. Various representatives from BlueZone group have participated and supported this program over the years, generously dedicating their time and expertise to supporting this program, fostering a strong partnership that continues to empower the next generation of engineers, scientists, and innovators.
BlueZone Group extends our heartfelt thanks to the organisers of the Hunter Defence Industry Expo for hosting such an impactful and well-executed event. Your dedication to connecting local defence industry leaders with students and educators is truly inspiring. We were proud to play a role in spotlighting future career opportunities within the Hunter region
