MARTAC T-38 Devil Ray USV in the Arabian Gulf

MARTAC is proving itself to be an exceptional Uncrewed Surface Vessel (USV) for military service around the world. In January 2023, Combined Task Force 152 conducted exercises in vessel boarding procedures in the Arabian Gulf that included the MARTAC T-38 Devil Ray. Exercise ‘Falcon Warrior’ included ships and boats from Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, that sailed in regional waters simultaneously while operating the MARTAC T-38.

The exercise provided the opportunity for “crewed and uncrewed teams to work together to provide safety, security, and stability in the maritime environment within the Arabian Gulf,” said Royal Bahrain Naval Force Capt. Rashed Al-Ameen, commander of CTF 152. Royal Australian Navy Cmdr. Matthew Ryall, the operations director for Combined Maritime Forces, said of the exercises, “The opportunity for the boarding teams to work together and share skills was invaluable.”

Combined Task Force 152 is one of four Combined Task Forces in the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF). The CMF is a multinational partnership made up of 34 members, including Australia, which exists to uphold the Rules-Based International Order (RBIO). It promotes security, stability, prosperity, and countering illicit non-state actors on the high seas across approximately 8.3 million square kilometres of international waters, which encompass some of the world’s most important shipping lanes.

Remote and Autonomous Systems (RAS) such as the MARTAC are changing the way Defence operates, both using uncrewed systems as well as combining them with crewed vessels. The MARTAC systems have fully autonomous, semi-autonomous, and full operator control modes and can carry many different payloads to be used in a wide variety of operations.

The Royal Australian Navy has been using the advancements in RAS technology to improve safety for Defence personnel and civilians, and to make operations possible that would be impossible for people. BlueZone is proud to represent MARTAC in Australia.
