Hydroid joins Huntington Ingalls Industries
Support for the Future of Robotic and Autonomous Systems for the ADF
Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) announced 4 February 2020 that it has entered into an agreement to acquire Hydroid Inc., a leading provider of advanced marine robotics, including the range of REMUS Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs) to 21 global naval forces, including Australia’s Five Eyes (FVEY) partners. BlueZone wishes to congratulate both HII and Hydroid on this exciting partnership, and we believe that this move will support the future deployment of robotic and autonomous systems for the ADF.
Under the new partnership, BlueZone will continue as Hydroid’s Australian sales, service and support partner. In 2019 BlueZone were pleased to deliver two Next Generation REMUS 100 UUVs to Project SEA1770 –Rapid Environmental Assessment. In 2020 BlueZone will work closely with Hydroid to establish a REMUS support capability for the Australia/NZ region. Maritime robotics will be an important future force multiplier for the ADF and BlueZone intends to support this through establishment of a sovereign industry capability for though life support.
HII CEO Mike Petters said, “The UUV space is a space that we believe is only going to grow in importance. In my personal view, it’s not going to be a replacement for anything, it’s going to be an augmentation to the Navy’s traditional missions and operations.” BlueZone CEO Neil Hodges agreed saying, “UUV are ideal systems to augment the MCM tasks of mine search, classification and identification,” – high-end UUV like the Next Generation REMUS 100 can autonomously complete MCM search tasks and support rapid identification of minefield locations.
