Cable Moulding for Demanding Applications

UVS has recently completed development of a new method of cable moulding to meet an overseas customer requirement for ROV umbilical connection.

The customer came to UVS when they where experiencing problems with bonding to a polyethylene cable jacket, and also to investigate a new requirement for enhanced water blocking to the second layer of the cable in case of a breach of the outer jacket. UVS has long experience in cable moulding applications and drew on years of knowledge to develop a method that was both cost effective and guaranteed to hold.

“Many cable moulding applications look simple on first inspection”, said General Manager Offshore Oil & Gas, Mark Musarra, “However, the devil really is in the detail when it comes to getting cable assemblies and cable moulding correct every time”. “UVS draws on many years of cable moulding experience for demanding customers in the Offshore Oil & Gas industry”, said Mark, “And this means we can approach complex jobs with confidence and also guarantee our work for use in harsh conditions”.

UVS has completed many jobs for customers with short lead times and it is the specialised moulding workshop complete with an extensive selection of mould shapes that enables us to complete rush jobs when required. A large selection of stock connectors and cable is also on-hand to support cable-moulding jobs. The technical team at UVS are all experienced in moulding work providing capacity to complete large jobs and ensuring that high quality is maintained through independent checking and certification of each element of complete work to meet ISO9001 Quality Management System requirements.

Mark Musarra also said that UVS has worked with many years with a large range of cable and connector suppliers. “Our strong technical connection to cable and connector suppliers gives us and edge”, said Mark, “We are often able to propose alternative and innovative solutions to our customers saving them time and money because we can work with a wide range of suppliers and have their trust and support after many years of doing business together”.

Based on long experience Mark Musarra recommends early selection of cables and connectors and UVS is ready to support customers early in the design stage. “The cable and connector can often be the last thing to be considered in a complex subsea project”, said Mark, The cable, connector and moulding are critical to the success and reliability of a project and UVS recommends that design teams consider these aspects early. Projects can be placed at risk by poor choice of cables, connectors or poorly completed moulding work.
