Training survey in progress on the Mississippi River in the Odom

vessel “Echoscan II”

BlueZone General Manager Oceanographic & Hydrographic, Mark Hegarty, has completed two weeks of training in hydrographic products that will provide enhanced support to BlueZone hydrographic customers.

In Houston, Texas Mark joined participants from organisations including: Port of New Orleans, Fugro Pelagos and Survey Equipment Services for three days of Hypack/Hysweep training conducted by Joe Burnett from Hypack. The course included a strong theory component and was based on the latest version of Hypack (2013a). Practical experience in operating the software gave all of the students confidence in using Hypack and the skills to obtain the best results from the software. Hypack showed their new 64 bit processing system that has just been introduced.

Moving to Baton Rouge, Louisiana Mark visited Teledyne Odom Hydrographic and was familiarised with the production of the MB1 Multi Beam Echo Sounder with a factory tour. The theory of the Hypack training was then put to the test with surveys conducted on the Mississippi River using the Odom vessel “Echoscan II”. The vessel was equipped with a survey suite comprising: the Teledyne Odom MB1; TSS DMS 05; TSS Meridian Gyro and C-Nav 3050 GPS. Hypack software was installed on a laptop and used for survey of the Mississippi River over a sand wave area. Activities conducted on the course included:

• Set up of navigation, MBES, heading and motion data onto the laptop

• Conducted a patch test to calibrate the MBES

• Gathered a group of sounding lines in the Mississippi River and processed this through Hysweep.

• Reviewed export options of the data for various customer applications.

Mark said that the training with a mix of theory and practical had been very valuable and that BlueZone was now able to fully assist customers with selection of Multi Beam Echo Sounders and Hydrographic Survey Software. “The first BlueZone training event in Australia is scheduled for November 2013”, said Mark, “we will conduct training for the Australian Institute of Marine Science in Darwin using a Teledyne Odom MB1 and Hypack/Hysweep”. Mark said that he looked forward to arranging future training events for interested hydrographic surveyors and science users.
