Inspiring Future Innovators: BlueZone Group Welcomes Women in STEM Students

Bridging the gap between education and industry is essential for developing tomorrow’s STEM workforce, and firsthand experiences can be the spark that inspires future careers.

 

This month, BlueZone Group had the pleasure of hosting students from the Rutherford Technology High School (RTHS) Women in STEM program, providing a unique opportunity for young women currently pursuing STEM studies to gain first-hand exposure to careers within the maritime technology and Defence industries. The visit formed part of a broader initiative designed to bridge the gap between education and industry, helping students better understand how classroom learning translates into real-world applications and highlighting the diverse pathways available within STEM careers.

 

As an Australian company with more than 25 years of experience supporting Defence, maritime, oceanographic, and autonomous systems applications, BlueZone Group recognises the importance of investing in the next generation of engineers, technicians, scientists, and innovators. Hosting programs such as Women in STEM provides an opportunity to give back to the local community while helping students explore career possibilities they may never have previously considered.

 

Technology On Display

Throughout the day, students were introduced to a range of advanced technologies currently used in Defence and commercial maritime operations. One of the highlights was a detailed look and interactive demonstration of the FUSION Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). Students explored the critical role ROVs play across Defence, offshore energy, and commercial industries, learning how payloads and vehicle configurations can be tailored to specific operational requirements. The experience became even more memorable when students were given the opportunity to operate an ROV in BlueZone Group’s onsite test tank, providing a hands-on glimpse into the world of underwater robotics.

 

Additional presentations introduced students to a variety of other maritime technologies, including Blueprint’s Artemis Hand Held Sonar (HHS), demonstrating the importance of diver navigation to support diver safety and operational awareness. Students also learned about the Saab Double Eagle mine disposal vehicle, a capability that holds a special place in BlueZone Group’s history. As the platform that helped establish the company’s Defence support capability, Double Eagle has played a critical role in Australian Navy Mine Countermeasure operations since 2000. BlueZone Group continues to support and sustain these systems today, showcasing the importance of long-term engineering expertise and sustainment capability in Defence.

 

Students were also introduced to the SEABER Micro-AUV, an increasingly popular autonomous platform that can be transported and deployed by a single operator. Discussions focused on how compact autonomous systems are transforming data collection and mission flexibility, with configurations available for applications ranging from side-scan sonar surveys and magnetometer operations through to environmental DNA (e-DNA) sampling. To round out the day, students participated in a live acoustic communications demonstration, learning how the speed of sound underwater can be used to accurately measure distance and enable navigation and communication beneath the surface.

 

Diverse Pathways into STEM

While the technology itself generated considerable excitement, one of the most valuable aspects of the visit was the opportunity for students to meet women already working in STEM careers. Across BlueZone Group, employees come from a wide range of educational and professional backgrounds, demonstrating that there is no single pathway to success within the industry.

 

Students heard from team members who began their careers in the military before transitioning into civilian technical roles, engineers who moved into customer-facing and business development positions, professionals who studied through university and TAFE pathways, and staff who continued their education through postgraduate qualifications, including master’s degrees. They also met individuals who started as apprentices and developed their skills into successful long-term careers within the company. These conversations reinforced an important message: STEM careers are accessible through many different routes. Whether through vocational education, university study, military service, apprenticeships, or ongoing professional development, there are countless opportunities for motivated students to build rewarding careers in technical industries.
