Delivering the Future of Mine Countermeasures: BlueZone Group Brings Integrated Capability to Australia
How REMUS, Kraken SAS and SeeByte software are shaping the future of autonomous MCM operations.
For more than 25 years, BlueZone Group has been introducing world-leading maritime and defence technologies into Australia, building a reputation as a trusted Defence partner that not only delivers capability but sustains it throughout its operational life. The recent delivery and acceptance of the HII REMUS 300 uncrewed underwater vehicle (UUV) capability marks another significant milestone in that journey, strengthening Australia’s sovereign mine countermeasure and underwater warfare capabilities.
Three Systems. One Mission.
The project began in March 2025 and culminated with the arrival of the REMUS systems in Australia in March 2026. What followed was an intensive delivery and verification program involving BlueZone Group, HII, Kraken Robotics, SeeByte, and the customer. Over two weeks of Set-to-Work activities, BlueZone personnel worked alongside the original equipment manufacturers to configure the systems, conduct functional testing, and ensure the integrated capability was ready for formal acceptance. This was followed by a week of customer verification activities, including system audits, inspections, and a live operational demonstration designed to replicate a real-world mission scenario.
The demonstration showcased the power of an integrated mine countermeasure system. The REMUS vehicle was deployed to survey an area using Kraken Robotics’ Synthetic Aperture Sonar (SAS), detecting and identifying underwater targets with high fidelity. Following detection, the vehicle’s payload was changed to a camera system, allowing operators to revisit and visually classify contacts. Combined with SeeByte’s SeeTrack mission planning and post mission analysis (PMA) software, the demonstration highlighted how advanced autonomy, high-resolution sensing, and PMA tools can work together to deliver an effective operational capability.
According to the project team, the objective was simple: demonstrate the real-world operation of REMUS, SAS, and SeeTrack while ensuring all contractual requirements were met. The result exceeded expectations. Feedback from the end user described the acquisition as one of the most successful they had experienced, with BlueZone’s technical problem-solving and responsive support, ensured the system was fully operational and ready for use.
More Than a Delivery
At the centre of the project was BlueZone Group’s engineering and technical team. Lead Engineer Ben Russell was responsible for managing the technical delivery, ensuring the integrity of the equipment, and overseeing documentation, testing procedures, reports, and safety case development. Working closely with OEM partners and supporting personnel on the ground, the team managed the transition from factory acceptance through to operational sign-off.
As Ben explains,“The system delivered to Navy brings together three primary systems into a single integrated solution. It demonstrates our ability to bring world-leading technologies from overseas, integrate them seamlessly, and deliver the capability that Australia needs.”
The delivery also reinforced the value of sovereign support capability. Before the OEM representatives arrived, BlueZone technicians undertook initial receipting and functional testing of the equipment. During the Set-to-Work and verification activities, they worked alongside expert OEM partners while gaining hands-on experience that will enable ongoing in-country support long after the OEM teams have returned home. The project provided valuable training opportunities and strengthened relationships between BlueZone, industry partners, and the end user. Most importantly, it provided operators with the confidence that local expertise is available whenever support is required.
BlueZone’s extensive experience with REMUS platforms made the transition particularly effective. Having supported REMUS vehicles in Australia for many years and serving as HII’s authorised depot-level service centre since 2022, BlueZone has developed specialised expertise in maintenance, repairs, upgrades, sensor integration, and operational support. This local capability reduces downtime, avoids costly overseas shipping for repairs, and improves system availability for Australian operators.
The successful delivery represents more than the introduction of new equipment. It establishes a foundation for the future of Australian mine countermeasure and undersea warfare capability. REMUS, combined with Kraken SAS and SeeByte software, provides operators with a highly capable, modular solution that enhances situational awareness while reducing risk to personnel. The project has also positioned BlueZone Group as a key contributor to future developments in Australia’s autonomous maritime capability landscape.
With an initial fleet of two REMUS vehicles now delivered, four additional systems scheduled to enter service, and a sustainment contract are already underway, BlueZone’s role continues well beyond acceptance. Ongoing support will include help desk services, annual maintenance, engineering assistance, upgrades, and future capability enhancements. It is a long-term partnership focused on ensuring the systems remain mission-ready throughout their operational life.
