Expanding Hydrographic Capability in Inland Waters with the Trident USV
Unlocking high-resolution hydrographic survey capability in even the most constrained inland waterways, the Trident USV is redefining how data is captured where traditional vessels cannot operate.
As hydrographic surveying pushes further into constrained and hard-to-access environments, the demand for compact, high-performance survey platforms continues to grow. Inland waterways; rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and coastal estuaries, present unique operational challenges, requiring systems that are not only precise, but also highly portable and adaptable. Seafloor Systems Trident USV delivers a purpose-built solution to meet this need, combining advanced multibeam capability with a compact, easily deployable uncrewed surface vessel.
Designed specifically for multibeam hydrography, the Trident USV is a lightweight trimaran platform that enables survey teams to operate safely and efficiently in areas where traditional crewed vessels are impractical. At just 1.3 metres in length and weighing approximately 31.8 kg, the system can be transported, deployed, and operated by a single person, significantly reducing mobilisation time.
Purpose-Built for Inland Survey Operations
Inland hydrographic projects often involve shallow water, restricted access points, or environmentally sensitive zones. The Trident USV is engineered to perform in exactly these conditions. Its compact footprint and shallow draft allow it to access narrow channels, nearshore environments, and confined inland water systems with ease.
The platform can be operated remotely or configured for pre-planned autonomous survey missions, enabling consistent data acquisition even in challenging or hazardous areas. With a survey speed of approximately 2 knots and up to four hours of endurance at survey speed, operators can achieve efficient coverage while maintaining the high data quality required for hydrographic applications. Whether undertaking bathymetric mapping of reservoirs, monitoring sedimentation in waterways, or surveying infrastructure such as bridges, dams, and intake structures, the Trident provides a flexible and reliable solution that enhances both safety and productivity.
Flexible Multibeam Integration for High-Resolution Data
At the core of the Trident USV’s capability is its ability to integrate a wide range of compact multibeam echosounder systems. The vessel’s centre hull features a dedicated moonpool, allowing for straightforward installation and optimal positioning of the sonar head. This flexibility enables surveyors to select the most appropriate multibeam system for their specific application, whether prioritising ultra-high resolution for detailed inspection work or broader swath coverage for large-area mapping.
Through BlueZone Group, customers can configure the Trident USV with industry-leading multibeam solutions, including MBES systems from SeaRAY, as well as other compact sonar platforms tailored to inland survey requirements. This ensures that each system is not just a platform, but a fully integrated hydrographic solution.
Operational Efficiency Through Smart Design
The Trident USV incorporates several design features that directly enhance operational efficiency in the field. Detachable HDPE outriggers allow the system to be easily packed for transport, making it ideal for remote or multi-site survey campaigns. Field-swappable batteries extend operational uptime, enabling longer missions without requiring full system downtime.
The platform’s dual brushless thrusters provide responsive manoeuvrability, ensuring stable track keeping even in currents or confined spaces. Together, these features allow survey teams to deploy quickly, collect high-quality data, and move efficiently between sites; key advantages when working in inland and nearshore environments.
A Partnership Approach with BlueZone Group
A key strength of the Trident USV offering lies in the partnership between Seafloor Systems and BlueZone Group, where the platform is complemented by BlueZone’s in-country capability and support. While the Trident delivers a proven hydrographic platform, BlueZone provides the complete, locally supported solution; bringing together world-leading sensors, integration expertise, and responsive technical support embedded within the region.
