SEABER Reshaping Ocean Exploration

Micro-AUV fleet for large-scale automated mapping and biodiversity characterisation

To date, approximately 80% of the world’s ocean awaits in-depth investigations. Deep sea exploration presents a major challenge as the technologies currently being deployed are intricate, expensive and rely on bulky equipment. SEABER harbour a belief that the future of ocean exploration lies in a different direction. This direction entails the deployment of high-performance, reliable and cost-effective micro-AUVs.

SEABER’s vision is to revolutionise ocean exploration by developing novel tools and methodologies that enable the mass exploration of the seabed. This vision encapsulates marine biology and ecology, and precise engineering sciences to usher in a new era of underwater biodiversity and ecosystem exploration.

SEABER’s flagship project is funded by the French government through the France 2030 program. A fleet of ten micro-AUVs will be individually equipped with state-of-the-art sensors including eDNA samplers, CDT, magnetometers, side scan sonars and passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) systems. Collectively, the fleet’s unique sensors will enable large-scale mapping and characterisation of biodiversity on the ocean floor. The expeditions cover remote and challenging locations including Saint Pierre, Miquelon and Antarctica. The extreme conditions will test SEABER’s micro-AUVs and prove the endurance and reliability of their vehicles.

Overall SEABER stand at the forefront of the latest deep-sea exploration. The project will test the capabilities and limitations of SEABER’s micro-AUVs. SEABER’s vision to pioneer new deployment methods and data collection techniques will be demonstrated and tested through the France 2030 program.
