SUT Evening Technical Meeting – 13 February – Perth
Surveying Subsea with the Latest Technologies
BlueZone CTO, Darren Burrowes, joined with other presenters for the first Society for Underwater Technology Evening Technical Meeting of the year on the theme Surveying Subsea with the Latest Technologies. Darren spoke on Maritime Robotics for Defence exploring the BlueZone journey in maritime robotics, beginning with the introduction of the first ROV to Offshore Oil & Gas in the Bass Strait through to current work with Navy and Army in unmanned systems.
Defence today faces the challenge of maintaining a technology edge in a rapidly changing strategic environment when technology is also changing fast. In the past, a technology edge was maintained through long-term research and development programs that produced products after many years of effort. Often this approach is now too slow when potential adversaries can rapidly innovate using COTS technologies combined in a new way. Transient advantage is the ‘new normal’ and seeking and maintaining a transient advantage in the ocean is a necessary priority for industry working in support of Defence.
SMEs like BlueZone have much to offer in rapid prototyping and development of new technologies for Defence applications. Focussing on the maritime environment, BlueZone supplies and supports robotic maritime systems that can perform the dull, dangerous and dirty work that results in a technology edge. Increasingly, robotic systems are used for distributed effects and deep work to provide new advantages to Defence.
