Indian Pacific Piloting

Demonstrating the flexibility and capability of the Wave Glider operational model, UVS has completed a piloting operation for an RAN exercise in the Indian Ocean from the UVS east coast facility in Newcastle, NSW. The ease of piloting a Wave Glider from a remote location opens up many possibilities for a persistent, low-cost sensing in the world’s oceans.

The Wave Glider was launched in the early hours of the West Australian morning to be ready for RAN exercises late in the day. UVS Wave Glider pilot, Paul Montgomery logged on to the Wav Glider Management System and took control of the Wave Glider piloting it to the area of operations and monitoring it in position throughout the day. Paul has completed extensive training in Wave Glider operations, maintenance and service with Liquid Robotics in Hawaii.

The Wave Glider “Z-tether” was also tested during the exercise and showed good acoustic performance for towing a hydrophone in a significant sea state.
